Introduction:


The aim of Planning 10 is to enable students to develop the skills they need to become self-directed individuals who set goals, make thoughtful decisions, and take responsibility for pursuing their goals throughout life.

Main Goals:


  1. Students will become informed decision makers, able to understand the effect of their choices on themselves and others.
  2. Students will be able to access information and analyze it for accuracy, bias, and relevance.
  3. Students will develop an understanding of their personal responsibility for attaining and maintaining their overall health and financial well-being, and for pursing and achieving their educational and career goals.
  4. Students will develop the knowledge, skill, and attitudes that will enable them to plan for their successful transition from secondary school to their adult lives.

  1. Careers and Education
  • Self-awareness and self-inventories – What are you suited for?
  • Post-secondary education and training – A million options!
  • Job-seeking, employability skills – The basics are often forgotten. Keep it simple!
  • Workplace standards and safety – Know your rights!
  • Transition planning – Don’t get lost in the void after grade 12.

  1. Health
  • Healthy living – Aids, STIs, Drugs, Alcohol, Mental Illness,
  • Health information and media literacy
  • Healthy relationships – love vs. infatuation vs. abuse. What’s “normal”?
  • Healthy decisions and their effects: sexual decision making, HIV/AIDS, substance misuses

  1. Finances
  • Financial literacy skills: budgeting, credit
  • Costs of post-secondary education and career options
  • Personal financial planning for transition from secondary schools


Guidelines and Expectations:

1. Attendance: This is the key – Show up everyday; work hard; you will pass.

2. Lates: My expectation is that you will be in class on time. Should you be unavoidably detained, please use basic courtesy by entering the class unobtrusively and see me at the end of class to explain.

3. Materials: You will need a notebook to keep notes, brainstorms, some assignments, answers, and doodles. Also, a three-ring binder will be needed for handouts will be given out during the course. Save all your assignments and handouts until the end of the semester.

4. Assignments: Unless otherwise stated, all assignments are to be word-processed. At the grade 10/11 level, it is appropriate that students present top quality work. Using a computer allows you to edit and refine your work. Please double space all assignments and use at least 12 sized font. Should you miss an assignment, please see me after school fordirection.

5. Evaluation: Remember that Planning is a required course for graduation. The course is focussed upon your personal growth, and your development of a transitional plan. You will be required to complete a specific number of projects. Some curriculum will be presented through speaker presentations. Please understand that if the projects assigned to you do not fit the way you learn best, or in some way conflict with your background or beliefs, please feel free to discuss with me an alternative.

We, the students and I, will be keep an updated website where you can find a list of daily activities as well as copies of handouts and assignments and other important information. Students will be also be contributors to the website by posting assignments, posting comments from discussions in class, and watching videos and other media within the website.
